Sharipa Urazbayeva speaks about short films and not only

Sharipa Urazbayeva is known for a number of short films, winning the I Baiqonyr Republican Short Film Festival and the Eurasia Spotlight-2017 pitching. This year, she will be a member of the jury of the II Baiqonyr. In an interview, Sharipa shared with us her vision of short and feature  films, plans to get to international film festivals of class "A", the difference between directing in big movies and on television, and her first experience as a Director.

Why did you decide to become a director?

- Since school days, I wrote short poems and stories on various topics. Since that time, I had a dream to become a director, which I embodied by submitting documents to Kazakh National Academy of Arts named after Temirbek Zhurgenov.

What work started your career as a Director?

- I released my first work when I was a second year student. The picture was set based on the story of the writer Mukhtar Auezov “Day of the defenseless” (“Қорғансыздың күні”).

What is described in your new short film project “Widow” (“Тұл/Вдова”)?

- I believe that “Widow” is a pseudo-documentary picture based on the motives of the real story, which I was told by friends. When I heard this story, I was so amazed that I decided to show the story to the audience. At first we thought to make a feature film, but due to lack of budget and technical capabilities we decided to make a short film, the script for which was written by Mayra Zhumabekova.

What is the difficulty in creating a short film?

- I believe that creating a short film is more difficult than creating a feature one, because the Director must tell the story in a short time frame, reveal the characters, show their experiences and motivation, and convey the overall atmosphere of the picture. Many young Directors start their career with a short film. this is a great platform for creativity and potential development.

What international festivals are you planning to attend in the near future?

- Of course, I plan to get to the big A-class film festivals, there are a lot of plans, and time will show what will happen next.

What is the difference between directing on TV and in a big movie?

- I think that directing on TV is more mundane than on the big screen. As the famous director Jean Luc Godard said: “The difference between film and television is obvious. When we go to the cinema, we raise our heads up, when we watch TV, we lower our heads down”.

What do you think will be the theme of the upcoming Baiqonyr?

- I think that various topics, including acute social issues, will be discussed at Baiqonyr.

What would you wish the current Baiqonyr participants?

- The short film is also a part of big cinema. Currently, short films are as good as feature films. Therefore, I express my gratitude to the Baiqonyr Republican Short Film Festival for the fact that it gives an opportunity to discover new names and accompanies the formation of young Directors in Kazakhstan. It is very important that the festival remains national, not international. As recognition among its compatriots also gives an incentive. I wish all the participants good luck.

Which of the contemporaries do you single out?

- I do not want to single out anyone, it seems to me that all contemporaries are unique in their own way.

Are you planning to make a feature film?

- I plan. You will find out about the content of it after a while.

We thank Sharipa Urazbayeva for the interview!
