Baiqonyr SFF-2018: Evening of Kyrgyz cinema

The upcoming third Baiqonyr Short Film Festival will host an evening of Kyrgyz cinema as part of anon-competition programme. The screening, sponsored by the Foundation of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan - Elbasy, will start on September 20, 2018. The main partners of the festival are Kinopark Theaters and Kinoplexx Cinemas.
Guests and participants of Baiqonyr SFF will be presented 5 short films by directors from Kyrgyzstan. All films are winners and participants of international film festivals. The programme for the evening has been composed by the famous film expert, film critic, member of FIPRESCI and NETPAC Gulbara Tolomushova.
“Kinoman” (2017) is the debut film of director Askar Nurakun uulu. The plot of the film tells the story of a boy who is trying to secretly get into the cinema. But all his attempts end in failure. He had no choice but to be content with the sounds coming from across the door.

Among the awards of the film are the Grand Prix of the Umut Forum for Young Cinema of the CIS Countries, the Special Jury Prize of the festival in Kayseri (Turkey) and the first place in the short film competition of the “The Commonwealth” film school (Georgia). The film was also selected for the competition programme of the Mo & Friese International Children's Film Festival in Germany and the BUFF Malmö International Film Festival in Sweden.

“Omur” (“Life”) is the work of Cholponai Borubaeva, released in 2018. The film tells about an elderly lonely woman from a distant village, who organizes her own commemoration. The film is based on the story of a lonely woman named Navat who actually lived in a village in Alai.
The film took part in the short film contest of the film school “The Commonwealth” in Georgia, as well as in the short film contest of Eurasia-2018 International Film Festival.
“We are fine” - a short film by Akzhol Bekbolotov, presented back in 2007. In the center of the plot is an orphan wanderer Sherali and a boy Kyyalbek, who escaped from home due to drunkenness of his parents.

The film was recognized as the best work from the Asia-Pacific region at the XIII festival of young directors in Tehran (Iran), and in 2009 at the Umut Forum for Young Cinema of the CIS countries he received the Grand Prix. The film is also represented in the competition programme of international film festivals in Dresden (Germany) and Dubai (UAE).

“Oymok” - a documentary picture of Kasiet Kubanychbek kyzy of 2017. The film tells the story of Aman's golden eagle, who once found a wounded golden eagle, took him home and cured him. But Aman had a longtime companion - a golden eagle named Oymok. The bird, having been jealous of the owner for the new brother, flies away on the rocks. Aman sets off in search of a feathered friend.
In the piggy bank there is a prize for the Best Documentary Film of the Ak Ilbirs-2018 Prize and a victory in the Best Film nomination in the national competition of the 7th IFF of the CIS, Baltic and Georgia countries “Kyrgyzstan - the Country of Short Films”.
“Tash-Kumyr” is a short film by Evgeny Chistyakov, released in 2017. The heroes of the story are two teenagers making a living at a mine in the abandoned city of Tash-Kumyr. The guys still believe that they can fulfill their dreams.
The film won the nominations for “Best Director” and “Best Sound Design” at the VII festival “Kyrgyzstan - the country of short films”.

The Baiqonyr Short Film Festival will be shown in two cities simultaneously - in Almaty at the Kinoplex Saryarka cinema and in Astana at the Kinopark 8 IMAX Saryarka cinema.
A film for participation can be submitted in the festival until August 31, inclusive.
