11 interesting facts about the Baiqonyr Short Film Festival

On the eve of the third Baiqonyr Short Film Festival, the Broadway movie portal decided to introduce readers to this important event for young filmmakers. The organizing committee of the festival prepared eleven interesting facts that are useful to know for participants and guests of the small film festival.

1. The festival is organized by the Broadway movie portal, founded in 2012. The editors of the site as part of the contest has its nomination “Broadway Choice”. This award was previously awarded to the short film “Knock Louder!” by Malik Zenger, “Once in a Small Town” by Asylkhan Shakenov and “I Believe in You” by Aisha Shaimerdenova.

2. For the second year in a row, the General Sponsor of Baiqonyr SFF has been the Foundation for the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Elbasy. This year, the film festival was supported as the main partners of the Kinopark Theaters and Kinoplexx Cinemas.

3. The Baiqonyr Short Film Festival is the only festival in Kazakhstan that has a competition in three sections: live-action, animation and documentary.

4. The first film festival was held in 2016 on September 17 and 18. The South Korean film director and scriptwriter, winner of the Venice, Cannes and Berlin film festivals Kim Ki-Duk attended and congratulated on the opening of the screening.

5. In 2016 and 2017, the festival was held in the Kok-Tobe park. The park is not only a popular place for recreation and entertainment, but also famous for its beautiful views of Almaty. This year the contest will be held for the first time at the Kinoplexx Sary Arka cinema.

6. The competition management is involved in the promotion of participating films on world  film sets. One striking example is the director Sharipa Urazbayeva. Her film “Potato Eaters” won the I Baikonyr SFF Grand Prix and, by agreement between film festivals, entered the Eurasia 2016 International Film Festival.

7. According to the tradition of the festival, the owner of the Grand Prix is automatically included in the jury of the next festival. If last year the work of the participants was evaluated by Sharipa Urazbayeva, then this year the director and actor Baimurat Zhumanov joined the jury.

8. The winners of the third show will be determined in 13 nominations: “The Grand Prix”, “Best Director”, “Best Cinema operator”, “Best Production Designer”, “Best Script”, “Best Experimental Film”, “Best Documentary film”, “Best Animated film”, “Best Actress”, “Broadway choice”, “Best Actor” and “Special Jury Prize”, including the new “Best Sound.”

9. The film statuette has a great story. The Broadway movie portal long before the start of the first Baiqonyr SFF held a special “Create” contest, which lasted from March to May 2016. Ten sculptures from different cities of Kazakhstan took part in the contest. As a result of a long vote, the work entitled “The First Step” by Orynkhan Rakhimbekov won. Statuettes are annually made of brass with gilding.
The author of the statuette is Orynkhan Rakhimbekov, the Festival Director Anuar Kenzhibayev.

10. This year, the panel of judges was headed by a film critic, a member of FIPRESCI and NETPAC, a member of the Union of Filmmakers of Kyrgyzstan Gulbara Tolomushova. The jury also includes the actor, director and producer Nurtas Adambay, actress Aruzhan Dzhazilbekova, producer, actress Bayan Alaguzova, Chairman of the Council of Young Filmmakers of Uzbekistan Oybek Abdushukurov, sound designer Denis Konoplev, director Baimurat Zhumanov, director and scripwriter Adai Abeldinov, documentary director Katerina Suvorova and production designer Yana Tyulkina.

11. The third Baiqonyr SFF-2018 prepared evenings of Kyrgyz and Uzbek cinema. The audience will be shown 10 best short films by Directors of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

This year's festival starts on September 20 at the Kinoplexx Sary Arka cinema and will last for four days. 47 works were included in the competition programme. 27 of them participate in the live-action film section, 11 in animation, and 9 in documentaries.
