Every year, a large number of film festivals of various sizes and directions are held in the world. However, against the backdrop of such major international film festivals as Cannes and the Berlinale, many forget about the importance of sets intended exclusively for short films. But a short film can be a ticket to the world of big cinema for a novice director. Broadway offers 10 short film festivals, which are a good launching pad for talent.

The oldest and most significant short film festival in the world, founded in 1954 in Germany. In 1960, the show was accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations. At this festival, Martin Scorsese, George Lucas and Roman Polanski, who are known all over the world today, presented their first works.
A film screening takes place annually in early May in the German city of Oberhausen.
One of the features of the contest is that the winner automatically enters the list of applicants for the Oscar.


Busan International Short Film Festival
The festival appeared in 1980 in South Korea and was the first of its kind. Initially, it was called the “Korean Short Film Festival” and at first only showed pictures of local Directors. In 2010, the initiators began accepting works from all over the world. The festival is held annually in Spring.
The highlight of the screening is the Guest Country programme, in which one country introduces not only domestic film production, but also cultural, social and other aspects of its life. In 2019, Switzerland will become a similar country.

 

International Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival
The International Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival is one of the most prestigious short film festivals in the world. It was first held in 1982 in Clermont-Ferrand, France. In 1989, the festival became international and now takes place annually in early February. It is believed that this film screening is the world's largest market for short films.
Applications for participation in 2019 will start on October 9.

Tehran International Short Film Festival
The international short film festival in Tehran was opened in 1984 by the Iranian young film society. In 2005, the festival held its first International Short Film Conference. Since then, the ISFC has more than sixty members from all over the world.

The Tehran International Short Film Festival is held annually in Autumn. This year, the festival will open its doors on November 9.

Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia
This is one of the most prestigious short film festivals in all of Asia. It has been held since 1999 in Tokyo, Japan. In 2004, the festival was accredited by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The festival programme includes the following sections: “International contest”, “Contest among Japanese films” and “International contest among Asian films”. A nice feature is that the winner of the Grand Prix is automatically included in the list of Oscar contenders.
The festival is held annually in late June-early May.

Izmir Short Film Festival
The international short film festival in Izmir, Turkey, has been organized since 2000 in November. Each year, it receives more than 1000 applications from 60 countries, and up to 8000 viewers attend the screenings. In addition to the competition programme, the film screening includes panoramic sections, master classes, discussions and various workshops.
Applications are open until September 1.
The International Student Film and Video Festival of Beijing Film Academy
The international student film and video festival in China has been held in Beijing since 2002. The initiators introduce students and representatives of film schools to student works from all over the world and help to strengthen professional exchange between film schools.
This year's festival starts on October 21 and will last a week.

All-Russian Author’s Short Film Festival “Artkino”
The film festival was founded in 2008 by the film studio “World of Art” in conjunction with the film club “ARTkino”. The project managers are film producer Sergei Tyutin and director, film expert Dmitry Kupovykh. Live-action, documentary, animated, experimental films created by students and graduates of Russian film schools, as well as independent domestic authors are invited to participate.
This year's festival will be held in Moscow from December 3 to 9.

“Kyrgyzstan is a country of short films”
“Kyrgyzstan-the country of short films”
is a well-known short film festival of the CIS, Baltic States and Georgia, which takes place annually in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
The film screening was founded in 2011 by public figure and film Director Sadik Sher-Niyaz. The festival provides two competition programmes: national and international.
Traditionally, the film festival starts on December 12 and lasts until December 15. Applications for participation in the 2018 contest are open until November 1 of this year.

Baiqonyr Short Film Festival
Baiqonyr Short Film Festival is the youngest film festival presented in this list. The screening was organized in 2016 by the Kazakhstan Broadway movie portal to support young filmmakers and promote the development of the domestic film industry. The General sponsor of the film festival is the Foundation of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan – Elbasy.
So far, the film set demonstrates the works of local directors. However, every year the festival expands the boundaries: this year there will be panoramic screenings of Kyrgyz and Uzbek films.
The cinematographic contest takes place annually in September. In 2018, the Baiqonyr Short Film Festival will be held from September 20 to 23 at the Kinopark Theaters.
Applications are open until August 31 inclusive. You can fill out the application on the festival official website Baikonyr.brod.kz.
